Sheriff Reminds Drivers of Car Thefts

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office posted a reminder to vehicle owners that unattended running vehicles are an opportunity for car thieves.

The Sheriff's Office has received several reports of vehicles being stolen. The owners of the vehicles leave them running and unattended to warm up on cold days. This is an easy opportunity for thieves to help themselves.

“A lot of the reports were of cars left running in residential driveways,” the Sheriff’s Office posted.

The Sheriff's Office also warned that thieves also target vehicles left running when drivers "quickly" run into a store or gas station.

“Never leave a vehicle running unattended with the keys inside, unless your vehicle has an anti-theft, shut-off device. Even if it's locked, a thief will break the window in seconds and steal it.”
