Penalty Kicks Cost Bulldog Girls

The St. Joseph Central Indians came to town on Senior Night to battle the Kearney Bulldogs. Although Friday’s game was one-sided in the Bulldogs’ favor, penalty kicks in double overtime gave the Indians a 5-4 win.

Senior players (L to R): Mia Adkins, Dilyn Sandoval, Rylan Cassity, Macy Hughes, Morgan Miller, Emma Weightman

The Kearney Bulldogs possessed the ball a majority of the game, but the girls could not land the ball in the net. The Indians’ goalkeeper continuously battled the onslaught of shots on goal from the Bulldogs.

Kearney’s defense and goal keeper had their work cut out for them as well, as Central’s forwards kept them busy when they had possession of the ball.

The game ended in 0-0 tie. New MSHAA rules requires an outcome, so prepared for overtime. When overtime play ended with the same tie, the teams battled it out in double overtime.

In the first 10 minutes, Kearney hammered at St. Joseph’s keeper. Emma Weightman, brought the ball out of the backfield and took multiple shots from distance. Midfielders Mia Adkins and Macy Hughes launched multiple shots at goal. Forward Bella Donze jumped into the act with her own attempt as well.

In the second 10 minutes, there was more movement with the ball then shots taken. With no outcome in double overtime, the players kicked penalty kicks.

Mia Adkins, Emma Weightman, Maddi Stevens, and Bella Donze all scored with penalty kicks. Goalkeeper Kylie Deason saved one of the Indians shots, but the Bulldogs missed their last kick.

Another five players from each team were chosen, and this time it ends with a golden goal. Kearney missed their first shot, but St. Joseph did not. This gave the Indians the victory, 5-4.
