Kearney Girls Fall to Pirates in Home Opener

The Kearney Girls Soccer team home opener brought the Platte County Pirates to town on Thursday, March 31 for a Class 3, District 8 match. Both teams played fiercely, but Platte County won the game 2-0.

The Bulldogs and Pirates hit the pitch hard from the opening whistle, aggressively driving the ball from end to end. Platte County opened up more chances for scoring, keeping Kearney’s defense on edge.

Just over 7 minutes into the game, the Bulldogs were fighting hard in the box to protect the goal. An attempt to clear the ball from the box took an unfortunate deflection and ricocheted into the net giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead. The wind was behind the Pirates sails after that, scoring their second goal at 22:29.

In the second half Platte County aggressively attacked the ball, which kept Kearney from getting any real offense going. The Pirates relentlessly shot at the goal, but Kearney’s defense came to the rescue. Kearney’s forwards made a few good runs, but just couldn’t beat the Pirate defense. The Bulldog defense didn’t allow Platte County to score again, however the Pirates’ 1st half goals gave them the win.

Kearney takes on St. Joseph Central on Friday, April 1. This game will recognize senior players Mia Adkins, Emma Weightman, Rylan Cassity, Macy Hughes, Dilyn Sandoval, and Morgan Miller.
