Clay County Commission Extends 2022 Property Tax Deadline

The Clay County Commission has extended the 2022 property tax deadline for all County taxpayers by an additional three days. The new deadline for taxpayers is January 3, 2023.  All taxes paid or postmarked on or before this deadline will not be subject to penalty.

Traditionally, property taxes are to be paid no later than December 31, with tax bills postmarked no later than December 1. This year, the vendor Clay County uses for mailing property tax bills notified the County that due to staffing shortages and supply issues, 19,388 tax bills were not mailed until December 2. In addition, the tax bills mailed by the vendor did not contain a postmark, which could make it difficult for taxpayers to identify when their bills were mailed.

Missouri statute dictates no payment of property taxes will be considered delinquent until 30 days after the tax bill was mailed. To remove confusion and to comply with statutory obligations, the Clay County Commission has delayed the deadline until January 3, 2023, the first business day of the New Year. The penalty-free deadline applies only to the payment of 2022 property taxes.

Property tax bills can be viewed and paid online at www.claycountymo.tax.  In addition, taxes can be paid in person at the Clay County Administration Building (1 Courthouse Square, Liberty, MO 64068) Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. or at the Clay County Annex (1901 NE 48th Street, Kansas City, MO 64118) Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.
