Same Scam, Different Target

The Clay County Sheriff's Office is warning that scammers are back to their tired old tricks, but this time they are targeting healthcare workers.

The Sheriff’s Office received the reports from a chiropractor and orthodontist so far in the scam attempt. According to the Sheriff's Office, a scammer has called several offices in an attempt to defraud them. The scammer once again says he is an employee of the Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say that the scammer told one of the doctors that they missed jury duty and there was a warrant for their arrest. The scammer told the doctor to withdraw $2000 to take care of the warrant. That doctor did not fall for scam, but called deputies to report it.

In another instance, the scammer left a voicemail to call a number that wasn’t even the Sheriff’s Office phone number.

“If you work in a local medical office, know that this is a scam,” reads a Sheriff’s Office social media post. “We never call you about a warrant.”
