Sheriff’s Offices Warn of Scams

Scammers are attempting to hustle people out of their money once again. The Clinton County and Clay County Sheriff's Offices have reported an uptick in scam phone calls over the past few days.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office posted a warning on their social media that a scammer is posing as a Sheriff’s Office employee and calling residents to tell them they need to take care of warrants or they will be arrested.

“Just nope. That's not how we nor any legitimate law enforcement agency operates,” states the Clay County post.

Clinton County Sheriff Larry Fish also said that scam phone calls have increased to Clinton County residents. The callers are using the same scam. They tell people that they have warrants and they need to pay with gift cards that total your bond.

“I want to use this as an opportunity to remind everyone that the Sheriff’s Office will never call you to advise you that there is a warrant for your arrest. We will never ask you to purchase gift cards in payment for posting bond, or for any other reason. We will never ask for personal information such as your social security number or banking information over the phone,” said Sheriff Fish in a post.

Both Sheriff’s Offices have said that they don’t call people with warrants and never ask for money or gift cards in lieu of bond. Neither agency said the calls were connected or where by the same individual or individuals.
