Kearney Performs Smoke Test on Sewers

The city of Kearney has scheduled smoke testing for Tuesday, May 30 at 9:30 am. The test of sanitary sewer line will take place in the downtown area between 2nd and 6th Streets.

Customers in the area have been directly notified of the work using their water & sewer billing information. Questions may be directed to Field Manager, Andrew Conrad, at 913-605-3611.

During the test, crews will send non-toxic, white smoke designated for this type of testing into the sanitary sewer system by blowing the smoke into a manhole. The smoke should not enter homes or businesses unless the plumbing is not functioning properly, or it is a rarely used fixture.

If smoke does enter a customer’s home or business, they are asked to open the window to allow ventilation, exit the building, and notify City personnel in the area. If customers have any doubts about the origin of the smoke, please call 911.
