Sheriff’s K-9 Duke Helps Arrest Suspect

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office assisted Gladstone Police with a stolen car on Saturday, March 18. When police attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled south on North Oak Trafficway. A Clay County Sheriff’s deputy successfully deployed a tire-deflation device, disabling the suspect vehicle’s passenger-side tires at Vivion and North Oak.

The vehicle was disabled and eventually came to a stop at E. 23rd Avenue and Swift Street in North Kansas City. The driver, 46-year-old Monte L. Meeks, got out and fled through backyards.

A deputy and his K-9 Duke ran after Meeks saw him reaching for his waistband. The deputy ordered him to stop and when he didn’t, he had Duke apprehend him.

Duke was able to grab a corner of Meeks’ coat but he took off his coat, and threw a second coat over Duke’s head. Duke was able to escape the coat and held the Meeks’ leg until the deputy could apprehend him. Meeks was transported to an area hospital for treatment of the bite before being booked into the Clay County Detention Center.

Deputies located a handgun about 10 feet away from the location Meeks was arrested. Deputies also found drugs in his possession and apparent methamphetamine inside the stolen vehicle. He also had multiple felony warrants.

Meeks is charged with resisting arrest, tampering with a motor vehicle and drug possession. He is being held in the Clay County Detention Center on a $150,000 bond.
