Kearney Sports Recap

Kearney winter sports and activities are in full swing and the Bulldogs are competing hard. Here’s your KPGZ Bulldog sports recap:

Girls Wrestling

The Girls Wrestling team was forced to divide and conquer last weekend. The Varsity went to a 26-team two-day slug fest at Belton while the rest wrestled Friday night at Excelsior Springs. Here are the highlights:

Excelsior Springs:

Elise Arellano (3-0) and Kailey Romero (2-0) both went undefeated and won their pools.

Dani Miles and Josie Quick picked up their first varsity wins as wrestlers.

Belton Lady Pirate Invitational:

This tournament was a who's who of KC Girls teams. Despite only taking nine girls and leaving five weights open, the girls finished a respectable 6th out of 26 teams.  Here are  some individual performance highlights:

Riley Walker: 2nd Place

Bailey Martin: 5th Place

Hailey Romero: 3rd Place

Kennedy McNally for registered her first two wins (both by pin) this week.

Golden Girls

The Golden Girls competed last weekend at their first regional competition at Liberty High School. They had two awesome performances, narrowly missing second place in pom by 1 point. Here are the highlights:

1st in Precision Jazz division 2

3rd in Pom division 2

Sophia Brown - 2nd in senior solos

Madelyn Duncan - 3rd in senior solos

Eden Irsik - 7th in senior solos

Sophia Frank - 3rd in junior solos

Sophia Frank & Aubrey Taylor - 3rd in duos

Boys Basketball

The Varsity Boys basketball team pulled off an amazing double overtime defeat against St. Pius X, 66-62, on Thursday, December 8. Junior Hanna led the team with 16 points and Manny Linthacum was right behind with 15 points. Brothers Bryce and Braxton Page each contributed 9 points.

 

Girls Basketball

On Friday, December 9, the Varsity girls basketball team fell to Basehor-Linwood in the 5th place game of the Liberty North Tournament 43-32.

Sophomore Ryleigh Van Emmerik went 4 out of 6 from the three point range and finished with a team high 14 points. Junior JoJo Kutch scored 10 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Senior Maddi Stevens led the Bulldogs with 4 assists. 

On Monday, December 12, the Bulldogs headed to their home away from home as this was the 4th time in the first 6 games of the season in which Liberty North has been the host school. 

The game didn't go the Bulldogs way as we fell by the score of 52-20. 

JoJo Kutch led in scoring and rebounding with 7 points and 7 rebounds.  Jadyn Barnes chipped in 6 points.

The Varsity's record stands at 2-4.
