Collision at Smithville Lake Injures Several

Two boats collided at Smithville Lake on Saturday, August 21, sending several occupants to the hospital.

According to the Highway Patrol Marine Division, a 1990 Maxum was stopped in the water facing west just north of the W Highway Bridge. The vessel was operated by Ryan J. Brende, 29, of Holt. The vessel was struck by a 2006 Sea Ray that was operated by 41-year-old Michael E. Brittan from Kansas City.

Ten people Brende’s boat were injured in the collision, including 26-year-old Haven D. Brende, who suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to North Kansas City Hospital.

Brende and another passenger, Joseph Kassanavoid, 32, of Liberty, and five minors who were on Brende’s vessel, also suffered minor injuries.  They were taken to North Kansas City Hospital for treatment as well. Two male occupants of an unknown age were also injured and taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital.

Brittan, the operator of the Sea Ray, did not incur any injuries in the incident.
