Lion’s Memorial Park Reopens with Splashpad

The City of Kearney is in the final stages of the Lion’s Memorial Park renovation, and the grand reopening is just days away. Kearney Parks and Recreation Director Eric Marshall received thunderous applause after he announced the opening date at Wednesday’s Chamber of Commerce meeting.

“We’re making the announcement today that Friday, June 18, will be our opening,” exclaimed Marshall.

The majority of the park has been refurbished with new playground equipment, new seating areas, an expanded parking area, updated bathrooms and picnic shelters, and a fully functional splash pad.

The entire Lions Park renovation project was budgeted for $1.2 Million.

Funds to pay for the park renovation were raised by the Kearney Enrichment Council. The city of Kearney received a $250,000 grant from the Department of Natural Resources to help offset the project’s cost.

“I’m looking forward to hearing all the children laugh, seeing the bucket splashing, and soaking up some sun myself with my nieces and nephew,” said Mayor Randy Pogue. “I started working on this project when I was appointed to the Park Board, and seeing this come to life quickly is truly exciting.”

The park will reopen to the public on Friday, June 18. The Kearney Chamber of Commerce will officiate a ribbon cutting at 9:30 am, and the park and splash pad will be available immediately following. The public, especially parents and children are invited on opening day to experience the splashpad and playground.
