In a February 8 YouTube Video, Dr. Miller indicated that although there is still community spread and the Clay County Public Health Department recommends hybrid learning throughout the county, there is hope for secondary level students to return to classes. “We have seen data trending in a positive direction both for the Kearney School District and Clay County,” he stated.

The data from the school district’s COVID-19 dashboard shows a downward trend from November when it reported a peak of 350 students and staff quarantined and 32 isolated. As of February 26, the dashboard shows 15 quarantined and three isolated. A person quarantined is defined as someone who has been identified as a close contact. A person isolated is someone who is staying home because they have tested positive.

Because of the downward trend and the hope that the situation will continue to improve, the district’s Secondary Reentry Task Force has begun planning on how and when students and staff can transition back to full time, in-person classes. Task force members have been working on plans and logistics to bring students and staff back to classes safely.

In a follow-up video released on February 26, Dr. Miller expressed hope for students and staff to return to full capacity in-person learning very soon. “COVID cases continue to trend positively, vaccination news is highly encouraging, and health departments have recognized improved conditions and have updated guidance for business and gatherings,” he stated.

Miller said there is much work to be done before students can get back in-person learning including logistics with bussing, meals, scheduling and lesson plans. The school district will keep families apprised of developments as they become available.
