Girls Swimming and Wrestling Excel in Conference Competitions

The Kearney girls swimming team competed in a varsity swim conference on Tuesday, February 9th, battling five other teams in our division.

Flannery Simmons took first overall in diving and Dani Williams assisted the team with a fourth place finish.

Andi Kreiling set two new conference records in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle events. Claire Woehrman earned a state consideration time in the 100 freestyle, and Tori Tarr posted best time and which earned her state consideration in the 100 butterfly.

The girls finished second in the conference and are headed to state competition next weekend.

The Kearney girls wrestling team enjoyed one of their best meets this season in Mid-Buchanan last weekend. They competed for a chance to advance to the Sectional Tournament and potentially the State Championships next month.

Unseeded freshman, Savannah McDowell knocked off the #2 seed in a huge upset on Friday night which helped the team move to second place after day one. On Saturday the team struggled but persevered in the competition.

The team ended up in sixth place out of 24 teams with four wrestlers moving on to the next round of the state series.

Laney Cecil received fourth place; Hailey Romero and Jaden Craig placed second. Lexie Cole was named district champion. The sectional tournament will be held in Platte City on Saturday, February 20.
