Kearney 2020 Graduates - “We Finally Did It!”

The Kearney High School Class of 2020 finally made it to the finish line. After considerable delay brought on by the Coronavirus pandemic, the school district held their commencement ceremonies at the TDR Auto Plaza Activity Sports Complex at the high school campus on Saturday, July 25th. With long delays, uncertainties of the graduation ceremonies even happening, and being forced to hold the event outdoors in 90 degree heat, it will definitely be a time the graduates will remember for the rest of their lives.

Approximately 300 seniors participated in graduation ceremonies that were divided into two time slots and assisted virtually by the high school’s Bulldog Broadcasting Network. Due to Clay County Public Health Department guidelines, graduates arrived in six foot intervals, wearing masks, and took their seats on the field. Parents and family members also maintained social distancing protocols as they looked on from the stands.

The commencement ceremony was hosted by Principal Andy Gustafson. Special speakers included former Superintendent Dr. Bill Nicely, and senior Tess Martens who delivered an inspiring message to the graduates. The 2020 Salutatorian was Maya Tyner and the Valedictorian was Abigail Jensen.

For the presentation of diplomas, graduates walked across the stage as their names were called. Parents cheered and even rang cowbells for their sons and daughters.

Graduates had different perspectives about graduating in 2020. Graduate Cameron Smith simply said “It’s over…I’m done…so happy.”

Graduate Alex Springer stated, “It may not have been the most memorable ceremony, but I’ll remember this year for years to come.”

The unusual circumstances of this year’s ceremonies did not seem to cast a cloud over the graduates spirits as when the masks were removed following the commencement, the class of 2020 was all smiles. They finally did it!
