The Kearney Historic Museum reopened to visitors on Friday, July 10th. The museum closed temporarily in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and recommendations by health officials to shut down non-essential businesses.

Director Gerri Spencer is pleased the museum is open although she had mixed feelings when it closed in March. “It was a sad day to close the museum, but it was also opportunity knocking,” said Spencer. “We took the opportunity to do a really deep clean in the museum. It was a mixed blessing.”

The museum features photos, maps and other artifacts from 1856, when Kearney was settled, through and up to recent years. Prominent displays are a recreation of the bank lobby, a train depot section, an antique cash register, the first post office recreation, a drug store medicine cabinet, the Kearney Trust bank safe, and Jesse James memorabilia.

The Kearney Historic Museum is free to the public and open Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00am – 2:00pm at 101 S. Jefferson Street.
