Missouri Unemployment Rate Continues to Fall

Missouri’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate shows that the economic recovery is pushing full steam ahead. The September jobs report says state’s unemployment rate fell from 7.0% in August to 4.9% last month.

Employment numbers increased in several industries in September. Government jobs saw the biggest increase with more than 4,600 new jobs reported. The trade, transportation, and utility sector saw the next largest increase with 2,500 jobs created. Construction and leisure and hospitality industries reported gains of 2,100 jobs and 1,500 jobs respectively.

Missouri’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has continued to be either below or equal to the national rate for 67 consecutive months. The national unemployment rate was 7.9% in September 2020.

The unemployment rate for Missouri peaked at 10.2% in April 2020 before falling in May. The rate continued to drop in June and July of 2020 as COVID-19 restrictions were eased. The rate saw a small decrease in August.
